91st Avenue Widening Project
The City of Tolleson will widen 91st Avenue, between Van Buren and Interstate 10 to improve the entry to Tolleson, as well as Paseo de Luces and the downtown businesses. Improvements include widening 91st Avenue from three to five lanes (two lanes in each direction with a center turn lane), curb, gutter, sidewalk and bus shelters. Improvements on the east side of 91st Avenue include undergrounding the drainage ditch and constructing improvements to block walls to provide an aesthetically-pleasing pedestrian corridor with a multi-use pathway, tree canopy and additional landscaping. Improvements on the west side include installation of block walls of varying heights and locations and landscaping to compliment the overall improvements to this important roadway.
Crews continue work on the east side of 91st Avenue to widen and reconstruct the east side of the roadway, scheduled to be complete sometime in June. Following work on the east side of 91st Avenue, crews will move to the west side of 91st Avenue, with the project scheduled for completion in September 2018. It is expected that 91st Avenue will remain open for travel; however, traffic will be shifted away from the work zone. Please plan for extra time in your travel during this work.
Related to work on the east side of 91st Avenue, the following statement was provided by the project team: “A miscommunication from the Project Designer to the Contractor resulted in the unfortunate removal of some existing trees along the project corridor which were intended to remain in place. The project has always included planting approximately 70 new trees along the east side of the project to supplement the existing trees and vegetation. As a result of the removal of the existing trees, the project will now include approximately 30 additional trees to replace those that were removed. At project completion, the City of Tolleson will have a safer roadway that will reduce traffic congestion, with a landscape character that is reminiscent of the historic condition and includes additional trees for the community to enjoy.
”Thank you for your patience during this work!
